Language matters

I think it was satirist Andrew Doyle who said on some podcast I was watching a year ago (or so) that the next culture war will be about language. How right he was, he (or she) who controls the language controls the discourse. In todays world more than ever its not just language that matters, even the words we use have been redefined (then re-redefined) making culture war battles interesting (yet almost meaningless) while the left wing of the political spectrum on the face of it have all the cultural capital on their side (corporations, Universities etc) the right wing have the numbers (Brexit didn't just come out of nowhere) But it does place us in a rather unusual situation. Historically, the Liberal left have been the ones raging against the machine, but we see little evidence of that machine being a right wing construct, in fact, the right wing has taken the place of the left in terms of being the "broad umbrella" when you consider how many feminists (normally a fierce...

Censorship and progressivism is okay (until it's something I like)

Populist right winger Nigel Farage has just announced that his bank is closing his accounts. He's tried 6 other banks all of whom have declined him a banking service. One has to ask why, many pundits are pointing to Chris Bryant hiding behind parliamentary privilege to make some outrageous claims against Farage Behold Did he or didn't he? Politicians and activists get paid all the time in order to secure influence and favour. But until conclusive proof is supplied, they remain nothing more than a rumour. The fact Bryant daren't repeat his accusations outside of parliament suggests to me he has zero proof of anything. Much like conspiracy theorist Caroline Cadwalladr, if you want to claim something, make sure you can back it up, or in the case of Bryant, don't hide. But influencing banks to shutdown accounts of people you don't like is not uncommon. Politically exposed people (PEP) come under much more scrutiny than the likes of the common man (or woman) in the stree...

Conspiracy Theories

The holy parchment of all that is honest and true commonly known as The Guardian just dropped its latest opinion piece written by regular contributor and hero of the far left, Owen Jones. I've not really covered Jones much, but from what I've read of his work in the past, this latest smorgasbord of opinion is typical of the mop-topped, baby faced one.  Owen Jones appears incapable of expressing his opinion in any other way that makes him not look like he just graduated University (the guys pushing 40). As he bludgeons his way through yet another essay, light on facts and oblivious to what's going on outside the Left Wing bubble he's surrounded himself in. In short. All Owen Jones articles appear to be recycled paragraphs from previous Owen Jones articles, smushed together and presented as "the latest thing" His latest is not about "extreme" websites peddling misinformation, of which he has spoken about often, but of how to tackle "mainstream...

Can women beat men in sports?

Image
In a world where it is universally recognised that men have a biological advantage in sport, some people will hold onto any raft that remotely supports their belief that women are the exact physical equal of men I have written about this on more than one occasion. here , here and also here .  Some feminists actually argue that women are just as good at sports as men and they simply refuse to believe what is right in front of their faces. This latest iteration of "Girl Power" the feminist argues that women very often win ultra marathoning events. I did look into this previously but it was not something I researched in any particular depth other than unearth general time comparisons and who actually does win most of these events (men) In terms of stamina, the gap between men and women does narrow, but it still does not disappear. We also need to take into account the nature of long distance running. In long distance running it is not simply a case of running as fast as you can...

Debunking the debunkers debunk

Who doesn't love a good debunk? Whether its a debunk in the name of affirming actual truth, or the seedier side of a debunk which only serves personal confirmation bias, to debunk something can not only be as huge matter of immense personal pride in defeating your opponent to the point they may never recover as you stand upon their slain corpse, or as tiny as a well reasoned debate where the truth has finally arrived into the argument and the loser accepts he was wrong its all rather fun and games while the spectacle is being played out. I was recently struck by a recent even that happened in the US. It became the Citi-bike Karen event. Important facts to remember Citi-bikes is a bike sharing scheme in New York.  There are over 1,000 citi-bike stations You create an account, scan the barcode on the bike via your phone and leave it at any other Citi-bike station when you've finished it. Some citi-bikes are electric assisted (which can cause arguments due to their popularity (thi...

The strange case of the far left & the war In Ukraine.

"Rage farming" Ever heard of it? No, neither had I. But this is just the latest in the long list of lefty buzz words in order to make sense of a world that increasingly appears to make little sense. So what is rage farming? ChrisO_wiki goes into great detail to describe it using the war in Ukraine as his case study. And when I say the war in Ukraine, I mean the the supposed lack of a war in the Ukraine. He goes on to explain how the twitter algorithm works, which makes my mind drift off on a different line of thought, and that is how much I notice how left wing people seem unable to understand how Twitters algorithm works (indeed pretty much how all social media platforms work) Its very simple, the more you engage with something the more the algorithm is going to show you similar content. For example: I once come across a woman who was complaining that she kept seeing conservative commentator Sophie Corcoran in her news feed in spite her not following Sophie. Yet a quick che...

Twitter is going through some things.

Many conservative black people have recently been expressing concern about the increasing number of video's being posted that highlight black on white violence. But the truth is, these video's have always been there but the Twitter of old would regularly delete those accounts (who are largely responsible for highlighting such violence) Yet now its something it no longer does, so it appears to the average user that there has suddenly been an eruption of black on white violence. Of course, the far left hate this, in very much the same way they hate people who talk about Pakistani grooming gangs, or just about anything that highlights a problem that appears to manifest itself from any particular minority demographic, so they do what they always do, throw out the usual slurs in the hopes of shutting the conversation down. Only this time it doesn't appear to be working. Now I follow a few of these accounts, I've seen them go through suspension after suspension for what is th...
